Oral Surgery

Oral surgery is the dental specialty that deals with the diagnosis and surgical treatment of the diseases, injuries, and defects of the mouth, jaw, and associated structures. The most common oral surgery procedure is tooth extraction. Oral dental problems that require the skill of an oral surgeon include treatment of cysts (liquid-or semisolid-filled sacs), tumors, lesions, and infections of the mouth and jaw.

The list below is not exhaustive but provides examples of common oral surgical procedures:

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

The wisdom tooth is the third molar to appear in the mouth. For most people, a wisdom tooth will begin to grow in during the late teen years, or early twenties. Sometimes a wisdom tooth can grow in with no resulting problem, but usually, a wisdom tooth will require removal, due to lack of space.

A misaligned wisdom tooth can cause problems on a number of levels. A poorly aligned wisdom tooth can push against and damage surrounding teeth; it can injure the jaw, or even cause damage to surrounding nerves. A misaligned wisdom tooth also presents the possibility of tooth decay, as food and debris can be trapped between the wisdom tooth and another molar.

Not everyone has a wisdom tooth; not having a wisdom tooth is not something to worry about. Sometimes a person will have a wisdom tooth that simply never erupts through the gum line. This is called an impacted wisdom tooth. This kind of wisdom tooth can still cause problems below the gum line.

Apicoectomy

An apicoectomy is a surgical procedure done to remove infection due to failed root canal surgery. The root canal systems are very complicated with many small of shooting branches. These canals are cleaned and inflamed and infected nerve tissues are removed during root canal treatment. Sometimes even after root canal treatment infected debris remain in the branches which prevent healing or cause re-infection.

Cyst Removal

Dental cysts are growths in the mouth that occur due to infection, disease of the gum tissue or an infection in the pulp chambers of teeth. All cysts must be removed to prevent structural damage to the teeth.
